Our four-letter word projects are not writing. Writing is an inscription of letters. While those letters can be inscribed on paper, clothing, computers and the like, they must still use letters. The four-letter word project is more accurately defined a composition, as it uses many different elements, from images to our single four-letter word, music and movement.

EDIT: Response to Comments
I agree that hieroglyphics are writing because they were in fact originally inscribed on stone or parchment. However, pictures are not inscribed; they do not have only one single meaning to them, only one word that can describe them. There are a multitude of words that describe one picture. This is not the case with hieroglyphics.

  1. Thanks for this insightful, interesting post. I think it's interesting how you make a distinction between writing and a composition. But HEY, would you count Egyptian hieroglyphics as writing? Because those are pictures conveying a message just like our video projects are pictures conveying a message. To me, that's a very early form of writing- one that we evoked in these projects. It's okay if you don't agree, just something to think about. :)

  2. Thanks for this post! I think it is interesting that you took a very literal stance on the meaning of writing. I also agree with Leah about hieroglyphics being one of the earliest forms of writing. Do you think that our projects tell a story or make an argument the way that hieroglyphics do, or do you think there is a major between hieroglyphics and our projects?

  3. Thank you for you thoughtful post. I like how you put a link that led the reader to the actual definition of writing. I do agree that the four letter projects are not writing. However did you ever consider that writing could mean something more abstract than the definition describes? As Leah says hieroglyphics are an interesting example. I'm sure there are more but I can't think of any. Thank you for your post.

  4. Thank you Jessica for this thoughtful post. I have to agree with the opinion you have stated. I don't really think our projects can be defined as writing either, but are a great example of a multimedia composition. But I do think that they had the same goal, and that is send a message. Would you agree with that statement? And do you think a mainly visual production can have the same impact as a written one?
